Are you keen on painting or drawing? Have air sports always made you dream? Are you concerned about environmental issues? If so, then pick up your pens, pencils or brushes and enter the 2016 FAI Young Artists Contest. The aim is to create a picture that illustrates this years’ theme “Air Sports in Harmony with Nature”, and to show the world just how talented you are.

Intermediate Category 2015: 2. Yana SERGEYCHIK (Russia)

Intermediate Category 2015: 2. Yana SERGEYCHIK (Russia)

Youngsters from three age categories: Junior (6-9), Intermediate (10-13), Senior (14-17) are invited to participate.

The 2016 theme: Air Sports in Harmony with Nature

The beauty of the earth is never clearer than when seen from the air. Every day, thousands of people flying in airliners look at the earth with a new perspective from above. Another group of boys, girls, men and women involved in air sports are fortunate to have a special view of the grandeur below them as the soar in gliders or float through the air in balloons. Others feel the rush of air as they parachute down to a beautiful field or cross the sky in an ultralight or helicopter.

From above, the fullness of nature is seen in ways unknowable from the ground. Helicopters give tours of the inaccessible rivers and canyons as balloons float across home towns, each giving new insight into how land, water, animals, and people share their environments. From the air, one is able to take pictures and film land that would otherwise never be seen. Aircraft do this without the need for roads. An airport or open field will do for the intrepid aviator.

While the air sport participants enjoy this freedom, they also must be very good neighbours to all the people and animals and the environment. This is especially important as they take-off and land. Air sports enthusiasts are happy to do this because the beauty of the earth is one of the reasons they love flying so much.

So grab your favourite pen or brush capture the connection between the land and the air. Create a work of art that shows air sports and nature in harmony. Good luck!

How to enter the contest?

The contest takes place in two phases, the details of which can be found below. You should first check the details and the deadline for submission of your work by contacting the FAI member in your country. Each country will select the three best illustrations in each category: Junior (6-9), Intermediate (10-13), Senior (14-17) and forward them to the FAI by 1 April 2016. An International Jury will then select the world winners in each category who will be rewarded respectively with Gold, Silver or Bronze FAI medals.

The artwork will be exhibited at the prestigious Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, USA and may be used by the FAI on other occasions.

About the FAI Young Artists Contest

FAI Members organise either a national competition or another similar process of selection for the young people resident in their respective countries. The national winning paintings are then submitted to the International Jury. A different theme is chosen every year to inspire the young artists and reflect the many facets of air sports.

Interpretation of the 2015 theme – “Create a poster for the FAI World Air Games Dubai 2015”
FAI Young Artists ContestIn December 2015, the top air sport athletes from around the globe will travel to Dubai, UAE, to compete in the largest air sports event in the world, the FAI World Air Games. Over a period of 12 days, spectators will enjoy special locations with outstanding views of the Palm Jumeirah and the skyline of Dubai while watching world class competitions and air shows fill the sky in a dazzling display of manoeuvres that can only take place above the ground.

Airplanes and gliders will amaze the crowd with spins, loops, and dives in the aerobatic games, while powered planes will show their skills in an air navigation race. There will also be radio controlled aerobatics: the same spins, loops, and dives, but at a much smaller size. Additionally, Indoor Aero Musicals will be featured.

People will look up to see colourful hot air balloons and airships dotting the sky. These graceful craft, around for over 200 years, will be displayed next to the latest experimental aircraft flown in from around the world.

Spectators will feel the excitement as hang gliders compete for aerobatic ability while paragliders show off their aerobatic and landing accuracy abilities. They will see parachutists not only practice their accuracy landing but work together in incredible formation skydiving and on their canopy piloting, whereas others will showcase their skills in the indoor wind-tunnel.

Last, but certainly not least, they will see microlights and paramotors compete in slalom races as helicopter pilots show off their craft in slalom and accuracy competitions.

All of this and much, much more will be at the FAI World Games 2015. Your assignment: grab your favourite art supplies and create a poster that captures the excitement and possibilities of the FAI World Air Games Dubai 2015. Good luck, and remember, the sky is the limit !

Awesome video from FAI

The FAI has released a new video featuring all air sports activities under the umbrella of the Federation. The 3-minute film succinctly presents the FAI sports and includes footage of FAI international records from Charles Lindbergh to Felix Baumgartner.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/wgBNEYzg4jc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The video sequences have been selected from various sources to highlight the beauty and diversity of Aeromodelling, Aerobatics, Ballooning, Experimental Aircraft, General Aviation, Gliding, Hang Gliding and Paragliding, Microlights and Paramotors, Parachuting and Rotorcraft.

“With this new video we aim to pass the bug for air sports to as many people as possible; all our sports have the great advantage of being exciting not only to practice, but also to watch,” said Secretary General Susanne Schödel. “We also want to emphasise that the FAI is part of the epic history of aviation and air sports, having ratified over the years more than 17,000 records including those of Lindbergh, Gagarin, Armstrong, Piccard, Fossett and Baumgartner, to name but a few.”

18th FAI Hot Air Balloon European Championship 2013

18th FAI Hot Air Balloon European Championship 2013The European Championship started yesterday with a boring long General Briefing. The 2nd European Championship run with the CIA loggers but without a big advantage. The director, Mathijs R. De Bruijn decided to use GPS altitude instead of baromeric. The second surprise was no 2D just 3D scoring only. A pilot mentioned on the General Briefing:

“They are forcing pilots to fly in windy conditions in area with many powerlines as low as possible. This is not about pilot skills, this is very, very unsafe. I have no idea why we cannot have 2D scoring.”

Me personaly don’t understand why they step back in the time. These loggers are worked very well on many Events in different countries with different scoring software and scorers.

I start to use the FAI loggers at very beginning and never had any problem. We didn’t have any issue with the loggers during the Czech Nationals a month ago too and I’m sure the FAI loggers are working well!

I'm participate here with my Czech freinds as the team manager.

For the first hours, the balloons take the direction of East. The routers on the ground will ensure the baton to guide them and allow them to travel the greatest distance. A half of the balloons are still on low levele to East but some of them going around 2500 feet and direction of North. Same destination to everybody:  greatest distance with a 1000 m3 gas balloon in the contest area. Good luck for everybody!

The bronze medal taken at the 9th FAI World Hot Air Airship Championship in 2010 brought Swiss pilot Stefan Zeberli (see picture on the right) to the third step of the ranking list.

About the CIA World Hot Air Balloon Ranking List
The purpose of the CIA World Hot Air Ranking List is to show a ranking of the top hot air balloon pilots of the world and provide a performance comparison among them. The list is established by a calculation formula that includes the results of the last five World Championships resp. Guinness World Record Attempt: Asia – Europe flight

The participants of International Sport Competition of Hot Air Balloons “Sky Fair – 2013” – which was FAI Sporting Event – made a special flight after the contest program. We travelled from Kungur (host city, Perm region) to near Pervouralsk (satellite city of Yekaterinburg) at evening 5th July 2013. There is monument with a huge column which shows the border of Europe and Asia  (56.870553, 60.047951). Twenty-two balloons are arrived to the meeting point. The distance is 250 km between Kungur and Pervouralsk which is not so much but the journey was hard because the Russian bus and roads. We had a good lunch and some rest. The organisers provided a nice folklore show too.

Some balloons are prepared to take-off close to the monument and the rests are moved to a nearby glade after the briefing in the Asian side. We didn’t plan long flight because huge forests, big lakes and few glades were in the flying area. The destination was only crossing the border of the two continents which was successful.

We recorded and scored the flights with same tools as the competition flights. The officials of the FAI Sporting Event checked the tracks of GPS loggers after the flights. One pilot turned on the GPS logger during the flight. We can’t record his take-off position but that was the first documented Event were many hot air balloons flight over the Europe – Asia border. The organiser will apply for the approval of Guinness Record.

Sky Fair – 2013, Kungur, Russia

Twenty-four competitors entered to the Event and five fiesta pilots participated too.  We made seven flights and twenty-five tasks. I had to cancel one flight only because the windy weather. All task sheets, measuring report sheets results and other information published on the Electronic Notice Board: http://balloon.hu/kungur2013/.

The contest area is with open fields, fields under crops and wooded, rivers, lakes, foothills areas. The road network is not the best and I had to reconsider the bad road definition but the local drivers help us so solve these problems. The organiser provided nice excursions for the participants too: visiting the Ice Cave, boat trip, visiting a Monastery, etc.
These teams of the organisers and officials are ready to run category one Event in Kungur too.

You have to come next year. It’s an interesting and great place. Must to see!
